Tapioca(Kappa) Avial

 INGREDIENTS:
  • Tapioca(Kappa)  - 1 big
  • Grated coconut  -  1/2 cup
  • Shallots(Kunjulli)  -  5
  • Cumin seeds  – 1/4 tsp
  • Curd – 1 tbsp or Tamarind - small piece ( half the size of a gooseberry)
  • Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
  • Chilly powder – 1 tsp
  • Curry leaves – a sprig
  • Coconut oil – 1 tsp
  • Salt – to taste
METHOD:
  •  Cut Tapioca(Kappa) into 2" long thin pieces
  • Cook tapioca by  adding 2 cups of water.
  • When the water starts to boil, drain the tapioca and cook it again by adding enough salt and water, until it become soft and tender.
  • Drain excess water and keep it aside.
  • (If you using tamarind, soak tamarind in a little water for sometime,mash it well with the hand,strain and reserve the tamarind juice). 
  • Grind together coconut,cumin seeds,shallots,turmeric powder and red chilly powder into a rough and coarse paste.

  • Add this paste into the cooked tapioca pieces and mix well.
  • Now switch on the heat to low and cook the tapioca for 1 minute,stirring frequently.
  • Add curry leaves,Curd (or  tamarind water) and cook until it is thick.
  • Pour 1 tsp of coconut oil around the Tapioca/Kappa Avial and remove from heat.
