Aval(Poha) Vadai

Flattened rice/ aval / poha  is easily digestible form of raw rice . It is  one of very popular  food item of  Indian cuisine. Aval/Poha is normally used to prepare snacks or light and easy , tasty food. Aval Nanachathu , Aval /Poha Upma, Aval/Poha Payasam, Aval/Poha Vada are some of them.  Aval Vilayichathu is an all time favorite of Keralites. It is made with aval/poha, grated coconut and jaggery as the main ingredients. Flattened rice/aval  can be eaten raw by mixing with jaggery.

INGREDIENTS:

  • Flattened rice/ aval / poha (thin) – 1 cup
  • Bread Crumb – 3/4 cup
  • All purpose flour/Maida – 3Tbsp
  • Onion, finely chopped – 1, medium
  • Cumin Powder – 1/2 tsp
  • Chopped ginger – 2'” piece
  • Green chillies , finely chopped  - 3 nos
  • Chopped  Coriander leaves – 3 Tbps
  • Salt – as required
  • Coconut oil for deep frying

    • Soak Flattened rice/ aval / poha in 1/2 cup of  water for 5 minutes or until soft. Aval Vada (3)
    • Now drain excess water place flattened rice in a medium mixing bowl.

    • Now add chopped onion,ginger,green chili,cumin powder, all purpose flour,coriander leaves and salt to this and mix well. In order to avoid the dough from sticking on your hands, pour few drops of oil on your hand and then keep mixing well.
    • Now add the bread crumbs and mix well to form a thick ball.
    • Make some lime sized balls out of it and flatten them to discs of 1/4 inch thickness.
    • Deep fry in oil until golden brown and serve hot with tomato sauce or any chutney.Shallow frying is also good.
