Chana dal sweet Cookies are quick and easy to make. With a simple ingredient list and a mostly make-ahead technique, you can make unique sweets for family and  guests.  Actually it was an experiment , but cookies are simply delicious and crispy.  You can enjoy Chana dal sweet Cookies as a  perfect tea time snack or  a side to a hearty thali or whole meal.

INGREDIENTS:

  • Chana dal/Bengal gram (Kadalaparippu) – 1 cup
  • All purpose flour  (Maida) – 2 Cups
  • Jaggery – 1 cup
  • Baking powder – 1/2  Tsp
  • Cardamom powder – 1/4 tsp
  • Dried ginger powder – 1/4 tsp (optional)
  • Butter or ghee – 1 Tbsp
  • Salt – 1 pinch
  • Olive oil – 2 Tbsp

    METHOD :

    • Premeasure and layout all the ingredients in your work place to make Chana dal/Bengal gram (Kadala parippu) Cookies.
    • Wash and soak chana dal/ kadala parippu  for 30 minutes in  a vessel by adding  sufficient water for soaking.
    • Cook the chana dal (Kadalaparippu) in a pressure cooker until soft or till 3 whistle in medium  flame,  you can switch off the heat when the pressure is almost filled so that the dal can be cooked in that pressure. Drain it very well.
    • Now boil 2 cups of water and add jaggery, keep on stirring till it is fully melted. Then strain it and keep aside.
    • In a medium sized mixing bowl, add all purpose flour, salt, cardamom powder, Dried ginger powder ,  baking powder and mix well. Keep it aside.
    • In another mixing bowl, add fully cooked and drained chana dal,  all purpose flour mixture ( all the dry ingredients) and mix everything well with your clean hand. While mixing,apply little oil in your hand to prevent sticking dough in your hand.
    • Now add melted butter/ ghee and the jaggery syrup to the dal mixture  little by little  and  mix well till the mixture thickens and roll in to soft ball consistency. The dough must be little bit thinner than chapathi dough consistency.
    • Line a large rectangular baking tray with parchment paper. Keep it aside.
    • Preheat oven to 360 degree F.
    • Take a small amount of cookie dough. Roll out the dough to one  inch thickness. Repeat the same with remaining dough.Press down firmly from the top of each rolled dough with your palm to flatten it little bit.
    • Flatten it and then shape with a cookie cutter or you can shape the cookies even with a glass. I shaped these cookies simply by hand.
    • Place each of them 2” apart in the  baking  tray .

    • Bake them  for 35  minutes or or until the tops of Chana dal sweet Cookies  /Tea time Cookies look set and are puffy, crispy and starting to turn golden brown. ( If you want, you can do egg wash before baking the cookies)
    • Let your Cookies to cool on the baking  tray for 5 minutes until they can be transferred easy to racks.
